A retriever, also called an apporting dog, is used to retrieve shot birds or small game during hunting and to do so calmly, efficiently, and without damaging the game.
Retrievers are most often used for waterfowl hunting, pigeon shooting, and small game hunting with shotguns, where birds frequently fall in water, reeds, or at long distances.
The retriever works in close cooperation with the hunter.
It must remain steady and silent at the shooting line, waiting for the command to retrieve.
Once sent, it should mark the fall, run or swim directly to the bird, pick it up gently with a soft mouth, and return it to deliver into the handler’s hand.
A well-trained retriever can also be used for tracking wounded game, thanks to its strong scenting ability and willingness to work.
