Characteristics:
The Raven is Sweden’s largest crow species, measuring up to 64 cm in length with a wingspan of 120–150 cm.
It is easily recognized by its entirely black plumage with a metallic blue or violet sheen, its large, powerful bill, and wedge-shaped tail.
In flight, it shows broad wings and a slow, soaring flight pattern.
Its voice is deep and distinctive, often described as a “kronk-kronk” sound.
Habitat:
The Raven is found throughout Sweden, from Skåne to Lapland, in forests, mountains, coasts, and open farmland.
It thrives in remote wilderness areas but is also seen near villages, abattoirs, and dumps.
The species has increased in numbers since it became protected in 1969.
Behaviour:
The Raven is highly intelligent and wary, known for its problem-solving abilities and complex social behaviour.
It usually lives in pairs during the breeding season but gathers in smaller flocks in winter.
Ravens are playful birds and can mimic sounds or use simple tools.
Diet:
The Raven is omnivorous, but mainly a scavenger.
It feeds on carrion, small animals, insects, eggs, berries, and human waste.
It often follows predators or hunters to feed on the remains of kills.
Reproduction:
Breeding starts early in spring, often in February–March.
The nest is built high in trees, on cliffs, or on power poles.
The female lays 4–6 eggs, incubated for about 20–22 days.
The chicks remain in the nest for 5–6 weeks before fledging.
Migration:
The Raven is a resident species in Sweden, though it may move locally in search of food during harsh winters.
Distribution:
The species occurs across the entire Northern Hemisphere, from North America to Europe and Asia.
In Sweden, it is common, especially in forested and mountainous regions.
Hunting:
The Raven is protected throughout Sweden and cannot be hunted under normal circumstances.
Protective hunting (control hunting) may only be carried out with special permission from the County Administrative Board or the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, for example near airports or carcass sites where ravens cause disturbance.
